RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay: My Honest First Look at Carnival's Beautiful New Private Destination

If you've been wondering whether Carnival's newly opened RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay lives up to the hype, my answer is simple:

Yes.

I just visited during my recent cruise, and while the destination isn't 100% finished yet, I was genuinely impressed. Carnival has managed to modernize one of the most beautiful private islands in the Caribbean without taking away what made people fall in love with Half Moon Cay in the first place.

What's New at RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay?

On June 1, 2026, Carnival officially opened the first phase of the expanded RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay. The biggest addition is the brand-new cruise pier, allowing guests to walk directly off the ship instead of tendering. Even better, Carnival's largest Excel-class ships can now visit the island for the first time.

The new area also includes:

  • Multiple new beach zones with complimentary loungers and umbrellas

  • New cabanas and daybeds available to reserve

  • New food and beverage venues

  • A scenic walking path called the Papaya Pathway

  • A fleet of complimentary trams connecting the different sections of the island

  • Additional shopping and guest service areas near the welcome plaza

The goal of the expansion wasn't to turn Half Moon Cay into another waterpark-style destination. Instead, Carnival focused on preserving the island's incredible turquoise water, soft white sand, and relaxing atmosphere while making it easier for more guests to enjoy.

My Favorite Upgrade: The Tram System

Without question, my favorite addition is the tram service.

The island is much larger than many people realize, especially now that the new northern beach areas have opened. The trams continuously run between the different sections, making it easy for everyone to explore without worrying about a long walk back to the ship.

Whether you're traveling with young children, grandparents, or simply don't feel like walking in the Bahamian sun, the trams make the experience so much more enjoyable.

A Few Things You Should Know Before You Visit

Because the expansion is still being completed, there are a few surprises that caught me off guard.

The original Half Moon Cay beach area that longtime Carnival cruisers remember is currently closed and blocked off while construction continues.

I also noticed that the grill located in the Mango section wasn't open yet during my visit. Fortunately, the other beach areas and food venues were operating, so finding lunch wasn't an issue.

Carnival has said additional enhancements to the south side of the island will continue throughout the remainder of 2026, so expect the experience to keep improving over the coming months.

Don't Miss These Photo Opportunities

One tip I almost missed...

As soon as you walk off the pier, take a few minutes to explore the photo spots near the welcome area before hopping on the tram.

There are several beautifully designed signs and scenic overlooks that make fantastic photo opportunities, and many people walk right past them because they're eager to get to the beach.

Trust me—it's worth stopping for a few pictures first.

Is RelaxAway Better Than the Old Half Moon Cay?

In my opinion, yes.

I know many longtime cruisers were worried that Carnival would change too much. After seeing it in person, I don't think that's happened at all.

The water is still that incredible crystal-clear turquoise color.

The beaches are still absolutely stunning.

The atmosphere is still peaceful and relaxing.

The upgrades simply make the island easier to enjoy while giving Carnival room to welcome more ships and more guests.

And the best part? It still feels like Half Moon Cay.

Final Thoughts

If RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay is on your itinerary, you're in for a fantastic beach day.

Go early, ride the trams, take advantage of the new photo spots near the pier, and don't stress if you notice a little construction. The destination is already beautiful, and once the remaining upgrades are complete, I think it's going to become one of Carnival's most popular ports of call.
