First Time on a Carnival Cruise? 15 Things I Wish I Knew Before I Boarded

If you’re getting ready for your very first Carnival cruise, first of all… I’m excited for you.

There’s honestly nothing quite like stepping onto a cruise ship for the first time, hearing the sailaway music, grabbing your first frozen drink, and realizing your floating vacation has officially started.

But if I’m being real? There were SO many things I wish someone had told me before my first cruise.

Because while cruising is one of the easiest and most affordable vacations out there, there are definitely a few things that can make your trip smoother, less stressful, and way more enjoyable.

So if you’re planning your first cruise, save this list because these are the things I genuinely wish I knew before boarding my first Carnival cruise.

1. Your Cruise Fare Includes WAY More Than You Think

One of the biggest misconceptions about cruising is that everything costs extra.

And while there are upgrades you can purchase, your base cruise fare already includes:

  • Your accommodations

  • Most meals

  • Entertainment

  • Pools

  • Comedy shows

  • Live music

  • Kids clubs

  • Pizza

  • Ice cream

  • Burgers

  • Tacos

  • And honestly… more food than you could possibly eat

For families especially, cruises can end up being one of the best vacation values available.

2. Download the Carnival HUB App Before You Board

This is probably the single biggest tip I give first-time cruisers.

The Carnival HUB app lets you:

  • View the daily schedule

  • See restaurant hours

  • Chat with family members

  • Book excursions

  • Check your account balance

  • Track activities onboard

And once you’re onboard, you’ll use it constantly.

Download it before embarkation day to make boarding easier.

3. You Don’t HAVE to Buy the Drink Package

I know social media makes it seem like everyone buys the CHEERS! package.

But honestly? Not everyone needs it.

If you only drink a few drinks a day, it may not financially make sense.

Carnival also includes:

  • Water

  • Lemonade

  • Tea

  • Coffee

  • Juice at breakfast

You can absolutely cruise and still stay on budget.

4. Boarding Day Feels Chaotic — and That’s Normal

The first few hours onboard can feel overwhelming.

People are exploring.
Rooms may not be ready yet.
Everyone heads to the buffet at once.

My advice?
Don’t let embarkation day stress you out.

Once the ship sails away, everything settles down quickly.

5. Carry On a Small Bag With Essentials

Your luggage may not arrive to your cabin for several hours.

So always pack:

  • Swimsuit

  • Medications

  • Sunscreen

  • Travel documents

  • Chargers

  • A change of clothes

That way you can start enjoying vacation immediately.

6. Motion Sickness Isn’t Always as Bad as People Think

This is one of the biggest fears first-time cruisers have.

Most modern cruise ships are huge and surprisingly stable.

But if you’re worried:

  • Bring motion sickness medication

  • Choose a mid-ship cabin

  • Stay hydrated

  • Look at the horizon if you feel off

Most people do completely fine.

7. The Food Is Practically Endless

And yes…
The late-night pizza is absolutely part of the experience.

One thing first-time cruisers don’t realize is how many food options there are included.

On most Carnival ships you’ll find:

  • Pizza

  • Burgers

  • Tacos

  • Deli sandwiches

  • Main dining room meals

  • Buffet options

  • Soft serve ice cream

You definitely won’t go hungry.

8. You Don’t Need to Dress Fancy All Week

People sometimes think cruises are ultra-formal all the time.

They’re really not.

Most days are casual:

  • Shorts

  • Sundresses

  • Swimsuits

  • Flip flops

There are elegant nights if you want to participate, but it’s much more relaxed than people expect.

9. Excursions Are Optional

You do NOT have to spend hundreds of dollars in every port.

Some of my favorite cruise days have honestly been:

  • Walking around the port

  • Going to a free beach

  • Exploring local food

  • Relaxing onboard while everyone else gets off

There are plenty of budget-friendly ways to enjoy port days.

10. The Crew Works Incredibly Hard

One thing that always stands out to me on cruises is how amazing the crew members are.

Many spend months away from their families working long hours to help create incredible vacations for guests.

Be kind.
Be patient.
And if someone makes your trip special, mention them by name in your survey afterward.

It truly matters.

11. Wi-Fi at Sea Is Different

Cruise Wi-Fi has improved a LOT over the years, but it’s still not quite like being at home.

If you need to work remotely or stream heavily, purchase the package that fits your needs.

Otherwise?
Sometimes unplugging for a few days is honestly the best part.

12. Balcony Cabins Are Amazing for Anxiety or Quiet Time

As someone who deals with social anxiety sometimes, I genuinely love balcony cabins.

Having a quiet outdoor space to:

  • Drink coffee

  • Watch the ocean

  • Take a break from crowds

…can completely change your cruise experience.

If it fits your budget, it’s one of my favorite upgrades.

13. You’ll Probably Want to Book Another Cruise Before You Leave

I’m serious.

Cruising becomes addictive VERY quickly.

Most first-time cruisers step onboard thinking:
“I’m just trying this once.”

And then suddenly they’re planning cruise number two before they even get home.

14. Cruises Are One of the Best Ways to See Multiple Destinations

Instead of unpacking multiple times, booking hotels, coordinating transportation, and constantly moving around…

You unpack once and your hotel travels with you.

That’s one of the biggest reasons I love cruising so much.

15. Nobody Regrets the Trips They Took

This is honestly something I deeply believe.

People rarely regret taking the vacation.

They regret waiting too long.
Putting it off.
Or assuming they’d “do it someday.”

Travel creates memories you carry forever.

And cruising is one of the easiest ways to start making those memories.

Final Thoughts

If you’re preparing for your very first Carnival cruise, I hope this helped make the process feel less overwhelming and a lot more exciting.

Cruising doesn’t have to be complicated.
You don’t have to be wealthy.
And you definitely don’t have to know everything before you go.

You just need to take the first step.

And trust me…
Once you watch that first sailaway, you’ll understand why so many of us fall in love with cruising.

Planning Your First Cruise?

I’d love to help make the process stress-free and exciting.
