10 Things I Wish I Knew Before My First Cruise

If you're getting ready for your first cruise, you're probably excited—and maybe a little overwhelmed. I remember feeling exactly the same way before my first sailing. There were so many questions I didn't even know to ask, and I quickly realized cruising is different from any other vacation.

Now that I've sailed on multiple cruise ships, visited ports throughout the Caribbean, and helped countless clients plan their vacations, I've learned there are a few things that can make a huge difference in how much you enjoy your trip.

Here are the ten things I wish someone had told me before I stepped onto my very first cruise ship.

1. The Cruise Fare Isn't the Final Price

One of the biggest surprises for first-time cruisers is that the advertised cruise fare isn't always what you'll actually pay.

Depending on the cruise line, you may also want to budget for:

  • Gratuities

  • Specialty dining

  • Shore excursions

  • Wi-Fi

  • Drink packages

  • Spa treatments

  • Casino spending

  • Souvenirs

  • Port parking or transportation

The good news? You don't have to buy any of these extras to have an amazing cruise. Many experienced cruisers sail without purchasing drink packages, specialty dining, or expensive excursions and still have a fantastic vacation.

2. Your Cruise Includes More Than You Think

One of my favorite things about cruising is just how much is already included.

Depending on your cruise line, you'll typically enjoy:

  • Comfortable accommodations

  • Multiple dining venues

  • Buffets

  • Main dining room meals

  • Pools

  • Hot tubs

  • Broadway-style entertainment

  • Live music

  • Comedy shows

  • Trivia

  • Deck parties

  • Kids' clubs

  • Fitness center

Many first-time cruisers are surprised by how much there is to do without spending another dollar.

3. You Don't Need to Overpack

I made this mistake.

Most first-time cruisers pack enough clothes for three vacations.

In reality, you'll probably wear your favorite outfits more than anything else.

I recommend packing versatile clothing that can mix and match, comfortable walking shoes, a light jacket for cool evenings, and one or two nicer outfits if you enjoy dressing up for dinner.

You'll thank yourself when it's time to carry your luggage home.

4. Download the Cruise Line's App Before You Leave

Almost every major cruise line now has a mobile app that makes your vacation much easier.

You can often:

  • Complete online check-in

  • View daily activities

  • Reserve dining

  • See deck maps

  • Chat with family members

  • Review your onboard account

Downloading it before embarkation day saves time and reduces stress once you arrive at the terminal.

5. Embarkation Day Can Feel Busy

Boarding day is exciting—but it's also the busiest day of your vacation.

Thousands of passengers are arriving at the same time.

Instead of trying to do everything immediately, take a few minutes to explore the ship, enjoy lunch, and get familiar with where everything is located. Your vacation officially begins the moment you step onboard.

6. Every Cruise Line Has Its Own Personality

Not every cruise line offers the same experience.

Some are known for family fun, others focus on luxury, adults-only vacations, or destination immersion.

That's why I always recommend choosing the cruise line that fits your travel style rather than simply picking the lowest price.

Finding the right match often leads to a much better vacation.

7. Shore Days Go Faster Than You Expect

When your ship arrives in port, it's easy to feel like you have all day.

The reality?

Time flies.

Whether you're exploring a beach, taking an excursion, or shopping in town, always keep track of the ship's all-aboard time. Cruise ships won't wait for late passengers who aren't on an official cruise line excursion.

8. Sea Days May Become Your Favorite Days

Before my first cruise, I couldn't imagine spending an entire day at sea.

Now, they're some of my favorite days of the trip.

Sea days give you time to relax by the pool, enjoy entertainment, explore the ship, try new restaurants, or simply watch the ocean from your balcony.

Sometimes doing absolutely nothing is exactly what you need.

9. Ask Questions Before You Book

One of the biggest mistakes first-time cruisers make happens before they ever board the ship.

Choosing the wrong itinerary, cabin location, or cruise line can have a huge impact on your vacation.

As a travel advisor, I spend a lot of time helping clients match the right cruise to their vacation goals—not just finding the cheapest option.

A little planning upfront can save a lot of disappointment later.

10. Your First Cruise Probably Won't Be Your Last

Almost everyone I know said they were "just trying one cruise."

Now many of them cruise every year.

There's something special about unpacking once, waking up in a new destination, and having your meals, entertainment, and accommodations all in one place.

Don't be surprised if you start planning your next cruise before you even get home.

Final Thoughts

Cruising is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to see multiple destinations in a single vacation, especially if it's your first time traveling by sea.

The more prepared you are before embarkation day, the more you'll be able to relax and enjoy every moment onboard.

If you're still deciding which cruise line, ship, or itinerary is right for you, I'd love to help you find the vacation that fits your family, your travel style, and your budget.

Fair winds, and I'll see you onboard!
